Dr. Stanley served as Chairman of Radiology from 1982-2002. He came to UAB from the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, Washington University in St. Louis, where he was among the earliest investigators of computed tomography. This led to the creation of his (and co-editors) widely used textbook Computed Body Tomography with MRI Correlation. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th editions have numerous co-authors from UAB. Dr. Stanley has served prominently at the national level of many radiological organizations. He was appointed to the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology and served for 7 yrs., finishing as the Vice-President of the College in his final year. He also served as a Trustee of the American Board of Radiology for 8 yrs. He has been an officer and president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Society of Uroradiology, the Society of Computed Body Tomography, and the Society of Chairmen of Academic Radiology Departments. Following his chairmanship, he was named the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Roentgenology in 2003. He also continues on the clinical faculty in abdominal imaging, enjoying his interactions with the residents and medical students.
