We currently have four full time faculty in Musculoskeletal Imaging plus one faculty who shares time between Neuroradiology and Skeletal Imaging. We offer three Fellowship positions. The Section is responsible for all MSK Imaging in The Kirklin Clinic and the main University Hospital, including radiographs, MR and CT imaging, as well as US. Our section interprets studies from six magnets (1.5 Tesla GE and 1.0 Tesla Siemens) and six multidetector CT scanners located within the UAB health campus. We emphasize fellowship involvement with MR imaging, but the fellows are also exposed to numerous CT, and MSK US studies and are responsible in helping perform all MSK procedures.

The section performs about 500 MR arthrograms/year. The section also performs an additional 300 more MSK procedures/year including percutaneous biopsies of bone and soft tissue, diagnostic and therapeutic injections of local anesthetics and corticosteroids into joints and spine, radiofrequency ablation of bone tumors and vertebroplasty. Our volume of MSK US is currently approximately 700 cases/year. The section has a major responsibility in the emergency room, which of course, offers a broad experience in trauma at this Level One Trauma Center.
The Fellow can expect considerable teaching, frequently with one on one staff supervision/consultation.

The Fellow will usually spend one morning each week at The Children's Hospital with Dr. Pitt and the Orthopedic Surgeons. The morning begins with a review of unknown cases presented by the Orthopedic Residents, a pre-op Orthopedic conference, followed by seeing patients in conjunction with the Orthopods in clinic. This allows us to see and examine patients and then jointly review the radiographs. This has proven to be very meaningful and exciting experience.
The Fellow participates in the general (non special procedure) night call with the entire Radiology faculty. This consists of back-up call for the Residents (two Residents are on duty in the hospital each night) and weekend day call, the latter being approximately one day every seven weeks.

Our hospital complex comprises approximately 1,400 beds, including the VA Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Alabama. We also have an extremely active and beautiful outpatient facility, The Kirklin Clinic, which opened in 1992. In addition to "bread and butter" cases, UAB is truly a tertiary care center and we see fascinating and unusual cases everyday.
