Angiography Interventional Fellowship

 Program Objectives

The Vascular and Interventional Radiology fellowship at UAB is an ACGME approved fellowship. We provide intensive training in a broad range of areas including diagnostic and interventional arteriography, dialysis access, venous access, biliary and urologic procedures. The program allows for fellows to act independently within a supervised framework providing a foundation for careers in either academic medicine or private practice.

Specific Goals for our fellows include:

We meet these objectives with:

  • Learning to perform and interpret a wide variety of vascular and interventional radiology procedures
  • Developing clinical and patient care skills
  • Developing communication and teaching skills
  • Opportunities for research
  • Experience in decision making and working with a patient care team of referring physicians, technologists, nurses, and other radiologists
  • Five experienced, full-time Vascular and Interventional Radiology faculty
  • High volume of cases with many complex and unusual diseases
  • Ongoing research protocols and activities
  • A supportive and congenial working environment
  • Four state of the art angiography suites located in the Heart and Vascular Center
  • For more information: Heart and Vascular Center
Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology
Our section provides diagnostic and interventional vascular services for both the University and the local Veteran's Administration Hospital. We also have active dialysis access and venous access services. UAB Hospital has an active liver center and therefore we see a high volume of biliary and TIPS cases as well. Our practice also includes drainages, transvenous biopsies, urologic and gastrointestinal interventions. Image guided biopsies are performed by the abdominal imaging section. Our overall case volume is high with over 6500 procedures performed on 3800 patients last year. In addition to five full-time faculty, we have a full support staff of two physician assistants, seven radiology technologists, seven registered nurses, one licensed practical nurse, and two patient care technicians.

Fellowship Program Organization

Three (3) ACGME accredited positions are available each year. Fellows are responsible for working up patients prior to procedures and following them afterwards. Procedures are usually performed by a fellow and resident with attending supervision. Call responsibilities are every third week. Benefits, vacation, and salary are competitive. Research activities are encouraged but not mandatory. Each fellow is responsible for assembling teaching file cases and for giving two to three lectures over the course of the year. Fellows are responsible for helping run a bi-weekly vascular surgery conference.
