	Top Ten Teachers
	The radiology residency program recognizes the “Top Ten Teachers” based upon resident evaluations of each faculty member. This is a semi-annual award to show appreciation to the faculty for their hard work and dedication to teaching.
	For July - December 2007 Eleven faculty members had the top ten scores. The following faculty received this honor:

	Joel K. Cure, MD - (right front) Associate Professor, Neuroradiology Section. "I always look forward to working with Dr. Cure. He is enthusiastic, encouraging, and extremely intelligent. He always makes time for residents and fellows to review cases with him in person, so that we benefit from his direct input. "	David E. Hogg, MD - (right) Assistant Professor, Breast Imaging Section. "Dr. Hogg is great to work with. He prioritizes teaching and provides appropriate supervision and then autonomy on procedures. He makes a special effort to add viewbox teaching to the rotation. He is also very encouraging to residents in teaching procedures."
	Ahmed Kamel, MD - (right) Instructor, VA Radiology. "Dr. Kamel is a great teacher who sets time apart daily for teaching. He always has interesting cases on hand to go over, and also makes an effort to review anatomy. I enjoyed working with him."	Matthew C. Larrison, MD - (left) Instructor, MSK and Breast Section. "He shows a true dedication to teaching. His outside studies/unknown cases were invaluable. His availability during the day was unique and helped with the learning process."
	Robert R. Lopez, MD - (right) Associate Professor, MSK Section. " A great role model in the MSK section. He always puts the patient first whether in US or doing a procedure. He has built and maintains excellent relationships with the referring clinicians. He never turns down a request for help and is always willing to answer residents' questions."	Desiree E. Morgan, MD - Professor, Abdominal Imaging Section. "Dr. Morgan continually challenges the resident and tries to disseminate her considerable knowledge to him/her. Extremely competent and makes resident education a high priority."
	Karthikram Raghuram, MD - (left) Assistant Professor, VA Radiology. "Dr. Raghuram is an excellent teacher of radiology. He respects residents, and treats residents as colleagues. His teaching style is constructive, and he takes time out of a busy neuro/VIR schedule to show cases 2-3 times every week. An asset to UAB/VA radiology."	Stuart A. Royal, MD - (right) Clinical Professor, Pediatric Radiology Section. "Dr. Royal is a great educator, and easily pulls a teaching point from every case, no matter how routine. He is patient in his questioning, and when an area of knowledge is found lacking, he encourages immediate reading to cement the topic; a very effective teaching style."
	J. Kevin Smith, MD, PhD - Professor, VA Radiology. "I cannot say enough about Dr. Smith - he is always available for help, has great teaching sessions, and is very friendly and professional. I learned a lot from him and can't wait to work with him again. Outstanding administrator and teacher!"	Joseph C. Sullivan, III, MD - Assistant Professor, Neuroradiology Section. "Dr Sullivan has been an excellent addition to the neuro staff, providing consistent viewbox resident education. His case conferences have been superb and greatly enhance resident education."
	Daniel W. Young, MD - Clinical Professor, Pediatric Radiology Section. "We should all hope to be as enthusiastic about our jobs as Dr. Young. He is an amazing teacher. He is one of the most inspiring people I've had the privilege to work with, learn from, and talk to. He encourages, challenges, and motivates his residents and is respected by all of his students. His excitement is contagious."
	Top Ten Teachers for 1st half of 2007
	Jon Baldwin, D.O. (far right), Assistant Professor, Nuclear Radiology Section. "A great teacher! He always takes time to teach residents during the work day. He is extremely clever with a keen sense of humor and gives excellent noon conference lectures. One of the department's best!"	Dr. Mark R. Harrigan is an Assistant Professor in Neurosurgery and works with the residents in Neuroangiography.
	David E. Hogg, MD (left) Assistant Professor, Breast Imaging Section. "Dr. Hogg is a good mentor and takes great interest in teaching residents." The residents particularly enjoy his Healthcare Law conferences, which are given on a quarterly basis.	Robert R. Lopez, MD (left) Associate Professor, Musculoskeletal Section. "I really admire and look up to Dr. Lopez. I think he is such an awesome clinician, caring physician, and motivating teacher. He is always smiling and offering encouragement, even in the face of frustrating/difficult situations."
	Desiree E. Morgan, MD (right) Associate Professor, Abdominal Imaging Section. "She is an excellent example of a radiologist who efficiently incorporates teaching into the workday. She reviews cases and explains findings as she goes. She challenges residents to think through cases. She is a very well balanced person and serves as a wonderful mentor."	Michael J. Pitt, MD (right) Professor, Musculoskeletal Section. "I think Dr. Pitt is one of the most intellectually stimulating and genuinely interested people from whom I have had the privilege of learning. His excitement about his field is contagious. I admire his emphasis upon and skill with the art of dictating reports."
	Karthikram Raghuram, MD (left) Clinical Instructor, VA Radiology. "His easy manner makes him one of the easiest faculty members to work with and learn from. He spends every free moment going over neuroanatomy with residents or showing them cases. A remarkable person and an invaluable asset to our education."	Stuart A. Royal, MD (left) Clinical Professor, Pediatric Radiology. "Dr. Royal's knowledge and expertise in pediatric radiology is second to none. He is very nice and approachable making peds an enjoyable experience. Thank you very much, Dr. Royal!"
	J. Kevin Smith, MD, PhD (right) Associate Professor, VA Radiology. "Dr. Smith takes time everyday to go over studies and dictations. His hot-seat sessions are among the best and his teaching style serves to motivate, not intimidate. I can not say enough positive things about Dr. Smith."	Jubal R. Watts, Jr., MD (right) Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Imaging Section. "Dr. Watts is an outstanding addition to our faculty and is a pleasure to work with. He is very intelligent, an effective teacher, excellent radiologist and always has time for view-box teaching."

	Mark Lockhart , M.D., Associate Professor, Abdominal Imaging Section - “He is an outstanding radiologist and a great teacher. I appreciate him taking time to show cases from his file. I thought his teaching was really superb. He is professional at all times and a pleasure to work with.”	Desiree Morgan, M.D., Associate Professor, Abdominal Imaging Section - “It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Morgan. Dr. Morgan is a true expert regarding the pancreas and an excellent radiologist. She spends valuable time teaching the residents and the reading room atmosphere is always pleasant. Her lectures and conferences are always worthwhile and educational. She is clearly an asset to the program.”
	Michael Pitt, M.D. (left), Professor, Musculoskeletal Section - "Dr. Pitt is an extraordinary faculty member. He is an excellent teacher, radiologist, and lecturer. I appreciate his commitment to UAB Radiology and his love for teaching." He is always able to give a lecture on almost any topic on the spot!!”
	Stuart Royal, M.D. (right), Clinical Professor, Pediatric Radiology Section - “Dr. Royal is an excellent educator and radiologist. It was a pleasure working with him and learning his approach to pediatric radiology. At the new case review conference each day, he always provides excellent teaching points and shares his insight.”	J. Kevin Smith. He also continues to do great things at the VA which makes it one of the best rotations in the program.”
	Jubal R. Watts, Jr., M.D. (left), Instructor, Cardiopulmonary Section - “He is a great teacher. He is very easy to work with and he encouraged resident interpretations and respected our opinions. He's a very humble person, and his intelligence is impressive. He is an excellent role model for a young radiologist. “	Daniel Young, M.D. (right), Clinical Professor, Pediatric Radiology Section - “Dr. Young is an excellent radiologist and teacher. He is passionate about pediatric radiology and educating residents. It was a pleasure to work with him. I also enjoy his didactic conferences as they are well prepared.”
